Glass types
Seven kinds of glass. Any of them toughened.
The thickness range is the honest spec. It tells you what a pane can be before it goes into a unit, and that is where a U-value, a sound figure or a security rating starts.
All glass types- 2–19 mm
Clear float
The most common glass in houses today. Distortion-free, smooth and with high light transmittance. Very versatile.
- 3–8 mm
Low-emissivity (Low-E)
Reflects heat back into the room. Glazed to the interior face of the unit. Hard-coat or soft-coat, with soft-coat the usual choice because it reaches the lowest U-values.
- 4–10 mm
Solar control
Reduces the heat entering a room while keeping high levels of natural light. For large south-facing glass and roofs.
- 6.8–16.8 mm
Acoustic laminated
A plastic or resin interlayer damps the frequencies passing through the glass. A typical build is 3 mm, 0.8 mm interlayer, 3 mm: 6.8 mm overall.
- 3–10 mm
Low maintenance
A coating that breaks down dirt and lets rain rinse it away, so the glass needs cleaning less often. It does not mean never.
- 4–6 mm
Textured
Privacy and decoration in many patterns: Stippolyte, Contora, Satin, Minster and more.
- 4.4–21.5 mm
Safety and security
Impact and penetration resistance, delaying intruders or reducing injury. Toughened for impact, laminated to hold together.
